Singing Songs of Sadness and Hope

Blues, Jazz, and R&B (Rhythm and Blues) are deeply rooted in the songs of African slaves' work songs, gospel, and Negro spirituals.

Songs of Sadness

  • Some say that The Blues was born in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta where cotton choppers and pickers sang to make the work go easier.
  • Even after the slaves were given back their freedom, many of them were poor and homeless. It was under these conditions that the term "being blue" appeared. The color blue expressed a feeling of sadness, depression, and of being lonely. The words below come from a Blues song. 'Singing the blues' has been a way for African Americans to tell of the unhappy things and injustice in their lives.
    • "I been hurt an' mistreated
'till I done made up my mind.
      Gonna leave dis ol' country
      an' all my troubles behind."

Songs of Hope

  • The blues and African spirituals were also messages of hope.
  • Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is a song of hope that African slaves sang while working in the fields and people still sing it today.

Listen to Beyonce sing Swing Low, Sweet Chariot in the movie, The Fighting Temptations (2003), and answer the questions below.
