In February, the MICRO Think Tank prompts will coordinate with African American History month and introduce an innovative visual artist, musician, or performer.

The image below is an oil painting by John Biggers. Here are some cool facts about him:

  • John Biggers was most famous after the Harlem Renaissance and toward the end of World War II.
  • John Biggers studied African myths and legends and liked to paint stories that connected the American South with Africa.
  • He was the first African-American artist to receive a fellowship from UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) and became one of the first African-American artists to visit Africa.
  • His paintings were often large murals that covered walls in public places or at art museums (We have a few murals in our school! Do you know how many there are?).

Please answer the questions by looking at the painting.

1. What do you see in the painting?

2. What do you think is happening?

3. How does it make you feel?

4. Do you have any questions about the painting or John Biggers?
