Stratton Students Learn through Video-Making

This semester, we've been working with students in Mr. Rose and Mr. Rutherford's third grade classes in small groups on an exciting video-making project. In this project, students worked together in small groups to identify a topic they wanted to explore and learn more about. Then, they used video cameras to research this topic, gathering helpful footage in the form of interviews and other types of video. With this footage, students then worked in their groups to decide what footage was useful to their project and helped us edit it all together into short video stories. During this process, students learned much more than simply how to hold a camera and press record. Instead, these students were able to use video as a way of exploring the world around them and to express themselves in a form of composition process that is directly tied to art-making and design-thinking. Stratton Interview Project: Welcome to Stratton!

Last fall, we began our experience at Stratton by working with two incredible third grade classrooms. We thank Mr. Rose and Mr. Rutherford for sharing their classrooms with us and allowing us to try out some fun ideas during their classtime every week.  One of the first things we discussed with these students in their small group sessions was that to be an artist means asking a lot of questions and learning from others. In order to help us learn a bit about each other, we asked students to write out a short list of questions that they really wanted to learn about their classmates. Then, equipped with cameras provided graciously by WILL-TV, the students set out on the playground (or school's entryway when the weather pushed us indoors) to interview and record each others' responses. During the course of the activity, the students not only taught us a lot about themselves, but also gained valuable experience shooting with cameras for the first time. After these interviews were complete, we created a short compilation of the footage and held a screening with each class. Following this screening, students offered many valuable insights about what footage was valuable, and what could be improved during the next project. Some noted that the best parts of the video was where the camera was framed neatly around the person's face, others agreed that it was hard to watch footage that was too shaky. In other cases, students noted that it was difficult to hear some interviewees and suggested that next time the person shooting the video stand closer, or the interviewee speak louder for the microphone. Most of all, they were delighted to see themselves on the big screen in their classrooms!
